True believers are so closely joined to Jesus that they are also joined to one another. For that reason, to receive one of Jesus’ followers is to receive Jesus Himself. What are the ramifications of this truth?

Jesus wanted people to repent, and that becomes very clear as He laments His rejection by the people of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum, and warns of their coming judgment. Jesus also revealed that punishment will be greater for those who have more opportunity to repent.

Unbelief does not reveal wisdom or intelligence, it reveals a willful rejection of what is obvious. Unbelievers harden their hearts because they don’t want to believe. And for that reason, God considers unbelief to be evil.

The second miracle that rabbinic tradition taught could only be performed by the Messiah was the miracle of casting out demon that made someone deaf and mute. It appears that Jesus intentionally performed such a miracle just to challenge Israel’s religious leaders. Their response was tragic.

Jesus is not waiting for people to sin so He can judge them or fail so He can discard them. If there is hope, Jesus is hoping. Today’s reading shows us how Jesus breathes hope into hopeless situations. So why should we ever lose hope?

The man with the withered hand was healed, not through his faith, but through a gift of the Spirit through Jesus, namely, a gift of healing. One day, all believers will find themselves similarly blessed.

The Pharisees hoped that Jesus would heal a man with a withered hand in order that they might accuse Him of healing on the Sabbath. Jesus seized the opportunity to expose their hypocrisy.

Jesus criticized the Pharisees for ignoring some words from the prophet Hosea. Like the Pharisees, we also need to take Hosea 6:4-6 to heart lest we become spiritually unbalanced, focused on less important things while ignoring more important things.

In setting up “fence laws” to keep people from working on the Sabbath, the Pharisees failed to understand the most important fact about the Sabbath—God’s reason for creating it. When we understand God’s reasons for His commandments, we are much more apt to keep the spirit of the law, and not just the letter.

Because Jesus’ disciples, under His watch, were going through fields on the Sabbath “harvesting” enough grain for a meal, He and they fell under the Pharisees’ criticism. But whose law were Jesus’ disciples breaking?
