The Jesus who was spoke in Matthew 19 about divorce and remarriage is the same Jesus who spoke in Deuteronomy 24 about divorce and remarriage, as Jesus was the actual author of the Law of Moses. So we must consider both with equal weight and harmonize them.

Unless we consider who Jesus was speaking to as He made His statements about divorce and remarriage, we are apt to misinterpret and misapply His words, making adulterers out of innocent people.

When we find enough information in the wider context of the Bible to “let ourselves off the hook” regarding Jesus’ apparent universally-binding statements about divorce and remarriage, shouldn’t we make sure there isn’t even more information found in the wider context that might let others find the same grace?

The basis of the Pharisees’ question by which they tested Jesus regarding lawful divorce is found in Deuteronomy 24. By studying that, we plainly see the error of the Pharisees, and the error of much “Christian” doctrine on the subject.
