Tax collectors in Jesus’ day were generally dishonest cheats, considered to be societal scum by their fellow Jews. Yet Jesus called such a man to follow Him, and that tax collector’s genuine faith went right to work, as Matthew left everything behind and began reaching out to his low life friends.

New believers are often in the best position to reach the unsaved, as illustrated by Matthew. And those who are truly spiritual will work with new believers, seizing the opportunity to reach their lost friends, as illustrated by Jesus, who attended Matthew’s banquet even though He suffered criticism because of it.
